Saugatuck Michigan has the last remaining hand-cranked chain ferry in America. It operates only in the summer and it takes visitors across the Kalamazoo River by an operator hand-cranking it along a chain that stretches across the river. Saugatuck has had a ferry crossing on the river since 1838. |

 SS Kewatin
The last Titanic era steamship to sail the Great Lakes. Like many passenger ships of that era on the Great Lakes, the Kewatin and sister ship SS Assiniboia operated under stringent regulations imposed for wooden cabin steamships following the SS Noronic disaster in 1949. Doomed by their wooden cabins and superstructure, these overnight cruisers lasted through the decline of the passenger trade on the lakes in the post-war years. As passengers opted for more reliable and faster modes of travel, the Kewatin and her sister ship were withdrawn from the passenger trade in 1965, continuing in freight only service for another year. After languishing for a few years, the SS Kewatin was bought by West Michigan entrepreneur Roland Peterson Sr. The ship is now the Kewatin Maritime Museum, and is permanently docked in Douglas, Michigan. Visitors can see passenger staterooms, Captain's suite, quadruple expansion engine, coal bunkers, officers cabins and the bridge crew quarters, dining and lounge areas, food preparation areas and the wheelhouse. |

 The Old School House Museum
The 1866 Old School House (The Douglas Union School), is now in the possession of the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society. This stately national landmark is the oldest multi-classroom school building in Michigan and one of the finest examples of 19th century school architecture in America. Along with its six city lots of lawn and woods, it has been transformed into a "History Center" where Saugatuck-Douglas citizens and visitors can benefit in a multitude of ways from the area's rich history and culture. |
